Responsibilities for Training in Eight Laboratory Sections
1. Hematology
This section focuses on training with slide preparation and examination. Sometimes, due to machine limitations, manual slide preparation must be performed. Most of the work involves CBC (Complete Blood Count), blood morphology, hemoglobinopathies, and related hematology tests.
2. Microscopy
This room deals with urinalysis, drug testing in urine, pregnancy testing, and gout-related cases. Stool examinations are also performed to detect parasites or substances. The room uses automated analyzers, but in emergencies, manual methods must be applied.
3. Clinical Chemistry (CC)
This room focuses on cholesterol testing (HDL, LDL), diabetes in pregnancy, liver function, lipid disorders, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. Most tests are processed using automated analyzers, but manual methods are required when necessary.
4. Immunology
This section involves screening tests such as RPR for syphilis, dengue fever, liver function screening, immunodeficiency, and infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Both manual and automated methods are used for screening and follow-up.
5. Molecular Biology
This room handles high-cost, high-quality testing using PCR techniques. Common tests include COVID-19, TB, and other infectious diseases. This is the cleanest and most sterile room to ensure accurate and uncontaminated results.
6. Blood Bank
This room has two main functions:
Crossmatching & transfusion service: Matching patient blood with donor blood stored in the blood bank. If incompatible, blood is requested from the Red Cross. This includes crossmatching for mothers and newborns. Daily, unused blood units must be released from the system at 3 PM for redistribution.
Blood donation: Screening donors, recording history, testing eligibility, collecting blood, and separating components (RBC, platelets, plasma) before storage and use.
7. Phlebotomy Room
Work starts at 7 AM with blood collection for patients according to queue order, including elderly, government officers, and general patients. Blood is drawn into specific tubes as ordered by physicians. The room is busiest in the morning and calmer in the afternoon.
8. Bacteriology
This section cultures blood, sputum, stool, urine, and other specimens to identify infectious organisms. For blood culture, bottles must warm up before processing. Stool, urine, and sputum cultures take 14 days for final results. Preliminary results (e.g., Gram stain findings) can be reported earlier. Automated systems may assist but often require manual confirmation to ensure accuracy.
