Are you constantly bored at work? Getting restless? Feeling stuck? All of the above? If you answered yes to more than one question, it’s time to investigate.

Outgrowing a job happens to all of us at one point or another. And essentially, isn’t the underlying goal to master a specific role and then prepare yourself for a challenging new one where you don’t have all the answers and don’t yet possess all the skills? The issue arises when we’re on autopilot and don’t necessarily press pause to identify clear signs.

1. You’re bored. Been there, done that. Over it? Yawn. As you nod in agreement, this is one of the fastest ways to tell if you’ve outgrown the job. When was the last time you learned something new? Are you procrastinating and postponing deadlines since you know you can complete an assignment in relatively no time flat? Is it easy to let your mind wander during a meeting or project because you already know the information?

2. You’re restless. One of the effects of boredom could be restlessness, and this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You’re hungry, on fire and ready to move on. If you’re anxious to move forward, feel stifled and stuck in a box, it’s time to unleash that potential energy into motion.

3. Work feels like a drag. Is it becoming more difficult to get out of bed in the morning? Do you dread going to the office since there’s absolutely nothing new? Are you slipping on the job? Not proofreading emails for typos? Shopping online during conference calls since you can still manage to somewhat pay attention and do your job effortlessly? Disenchanted by various projects because you feel you’ve already mastered them? There may be a sense of complacency but more importantly, sometimes the work output begins to slide because it can. Simply stated, it’s weighing you down.

4. Other people have told you. Words have weight. When other people have pointed out things to you it’s time pay attention, no matter how subtle. For instance, a boss may tell you during a performance review there aren’t any new goals to set since you’ve met and exceeded all of them. Or maybe there’s not a promotion to strive for since the higher roles are already filled and those people aren’t planning to leave any time soon. Other people may be blunt and ask what you’re still doing there, thereby recognizing your potential and how much more you can accomplish than being stifled. Their candidness is essentially a gift.

5. You’re feeling dissatisfied. When we truly tap into inner quiet and peace by journaling or meditating, sometimes we discover the answers were there all along. It's fine if you’ve been coasting in your job for a while or if you like the company, office or your co-workers. But in the big picture, how would you describe your 12-month outlook for the job? The next two years? Are you excited, results-oriented, learning, growing, making an impact? Or are you more frustrated, oppressed, stuck, eager for something more challenging and more exciting? Sometimes we block fear or our true attitudes toward a job thinking by convincing ourselves things could be much worse. And they can be. But the alternative is true, too. They can be so much better.

6. You’ve mastered the job description. Still unsure? Look at your job description. If you have the original job description for your role or the résumé you submitted when you started, go ahead and review both documents. If you’ve accomplished everything on the job description and know it inside and out without having to blink an eye, that’s a sure sign you’ve outgrown the job. Could you write a training manual for someone else? Explain your job effortlessly to a complete stranger? You get the point.

Taking it one step further, if you’ve mastered the tasks and responsibilities a long time ago, don’t beat yourself up about it. Chances are you outgrew your job a while ago. The solution is clear: You’re overdue and owe it to yourself to grow into a new, more challenging one.
